Jim Boeheim Goes Nuts After Bad Call, Costs Team Chance At Beating Duke
After making it until Wednesday without a loss this season, top-ranked Syracuse has now been beaten twice in a row after a wild ending at Duke tonight assisted by the referees and an out-of-control, berserk Jim Boeheim.
With the Orange down 60-58, C.J. Fair drove to the rim and put up what would have been the tying score with ten seconds remaining—but officials called the Syracuse star for an offensive foul, sending Boeheim apoplectic. The legendary head coach earned two quick technical fouls, an ejection, and the assurance his team would never recover from all the free throws he handed the Blue Devils. (Since it was an offensive foul, Syracuse could have stolen Duke's inbound pass or otherwise gained control of the ball and tied the game or even hit a buzzer-beating three for the win.) Duke ended up taking a 66-60 victory.
The call on Fair wasn't, uh, fair, but Boeheim fully deserved being t'd up. Running into the middle of the court, waving your arms wildly, and screaming "BULLSHIT! BULLSHIT!" in a referee's face will earn you the bench foul every time. [ESPN]
