England Fight Back Against Norway, Advance With Late Thunderbastard Goal
If you’re going to send a country home, this is how you send them on their way.
England played Norway today in the World Cup round of 16, and though England came into the game as the higher-ranked side, Norway jumped all over them, creating chances and trouble with forward Isabell Herlovsen and the rest of their athletic attackers. England were pinned back much of the first half. Nine minutes after intermission, Norway broke through. It felt like England were about to catch a beating. And then the Three Lionesses decided to Do The Shit.
In the 61st minute, Stephanie Houghton pulled England level, setting up the above highlight, which is of England right back Lucy Bronze receiving a layoff at the top of the box from Jodie Taylor, and then proceeding to score an honest-to-God thunderbastard of a game-winning goal.
We said earlier England would have to lose in the group stage to have any chance of going deep in this tournament. They did, and then they took care of Norway, and now their next match in the quarterfinals is a very winnable Saturday jaunt against host nation Canada.
