Eric Fehr Used Some Kind Of Dark Wizardry To Score This Overtime Winner
I'm especially taken by the screengrab at the top of the Puck Daddy post on Eric Fehr's OT goal that gave the Capitals a 4-3 win over Boston last night, completing a comeback from 3-0. Fehr was all alone entering the Bruins zone, with two defenseman directly in front of him—Dougie Hamilton to his left, Dennis Seidenberg to his right—and two backchecking forwards cutting off any lateral passes. No f'ing way he even gets a shot off.
But three or four quick dekes, and Fehr was able to muscle through just enough to roof the puck, even falling down. Fehr doesn't totally remember how he did it—"I kind of blacked out for a bit there but saw the puck on my stick"—but there it is on the replay. No sorcery, just tenacity.
It capped a three-point night for Fehr, who has to be in the conversation for comeback player of the year. He came up with Washington, but unfortunately for him at a time the Caps had a glut of right wingers and no problems scoring. They shipped him to Winnipeg two summers ago for cap relief, where he promptly underwent shoulder surgery and missed most of the season. The Jets let him go, the Caps snapped him up again for a song, and Fehr is back in a city where they make him tribute videos set to Offspring ballads.
