Allen Iverson Tries To Make Sense Of The Unfathomable
Put us in the camp of people who think Allen Iverson is one of the most compelling and, yeah, likable athletes in sports; it's impossible to take your eyes off him when he's on the court, and he's stubbornly, awesomely himself in every aspect when he's off it. It's sad to see his career rotting away on a bad team (albeit one off to a good start).
In another aspect to Iverson's career and life that's just fascinating and quietly noble, Iverson has offered to pay for the funeral of a kid who was killed over an Iverson jersey. The kid was shot in 2003 when he refused to give up his Iverson jersey to a group of teens, and this last week, Iverson offered to pay for the funeral. "'I don't think one guy can do what needs to be done, but I think one guy can help,'' Iverson told the AP before Wednesday night's game in Seattle. ''I think it's going to take a collective effort. and there is a lot of good people trying to help the situation in Philadelphia.''
We cannot imagine the psychological toll it must take on a person to have a teenager killed over an article of clothing that has your name on it ... we really can't.
