Costa Rica Manager Resigns After Brawling With Security Guard At Match
As expected, Costa Rica national team manager Paulo Wanchope resigned today, one day after he got into a videotaped brawl with a security guard at an Olympic qualifier. According to the Tico Times, Wanchope remorsefully said “We’re all human and sometimes we can lose our senses, and yesterday I lost my senses disgracefully.”
After a World Cup in which they shockingly topped a group featuring Italy, England, and Uruguay, and took the Netherlands all the way to penalties in the quarterfinals, Costa Rica have played very poorly. Wanchope took over last summer but wasn’t officially named manager until January, and departs with a 0-4-5 official record under his belt. The next manager will have to get things together quickly, as Costa Rica begins 2018 World Cup qualifying in just three months.
