Giants Pitcher Yusmeiro Petit Broke An MLB Record Today
Yusmeiro Petit doesn't have a spot in the Giants' rotation, but through relief appearances and one spot start, he earned some recognition today. After striking out Charlie Culberson in the third inning against the Rockies, Petit broke the MLB record for most consecutive batters retired with 46.
CSN Bay Area has the list of every retired batter in Petit's streak, which started on July 22 against the Philadelphia Phillies. The biggest challenge came in a relief appearance against the Nationals on August 23 after Tim Lincecum was shelled and yanked. Petit pitched 4 1/3 innings of perfect ball before departing. Mark Buehrle had held the previous record with 45 batters retired in 2009 with the White Sox.
After breaking the record, Petit lost his streak on the very next batter, when Rockies pitcher Jordan Lyles hit a double. It was fun while it lasted.
