Imagine That: Being Able To Watch Your Team On TV
We don't mean to speak ill of the dead, but we don't find it all that surprising that less than a month after the death of owner Bill Wirtz, the Blackhawks are close to finally having their games on television.
Wirtz's most notorious penny-pinching maneuver of not televising the Blackhawks' home games — great way to build and nurture a fanbase, by the way — could be coming to an end.
n a Monday memo, Wirtz told employees that Blackhawks representatives met with Comcast SportsNet executives last week about getting some home games on the air during the current season. "It's important to understand that CSN's current schedule was developed well over a year ago, so fitting the Hawks into that schedule can't be done overnight," wrote Wirtz, who succeeded his late father, William Wirtz, as head of the family's $1.3 billion business empire earlier this month. "But it can be done and ... we are convinced it is the appropriate next step to re-energizing Chicago hockey fans and creating new fans."
The Blackhawks are off to a great start this year, but we wonder on November 11, the day the first home game is scheduled to be shown, if fan will even recognize the arena.
