Larry Bowa Is Ejected, Drops F-Bombs, Threatens Daniel Murphy With A Beaning
Phillies bench coach Larry Bowa was ejected in the seventh inning of tonight’s 6-5 loss to the Mets, and made sure to get his money’s worth as he threw a couple of F-bombs Daniel Murphy’s way and threatened him with a beaning.
The incident popped off as Phillies batter Darin Ruf was getting set for the pitch when Mets reliever Hansel Robles came to the plate. Though the pitch was waved off, the Phillies thought Ruf was being quick-pitched, and teammate Jeff Francoeur jumped out of the dugout to yell. The benches soon cleared and Bowa was ejected, but after walking into the dugout he came back out on the field to go apeshit and threaten Murphy.
Bowa’s anger towards Murphy seems to have its roots in last night’s 16-7 shellacking, when the Mets hit eight home runs. One of those eight was hit by Murphy, and afterwards he stared at it and tossed his bat in the sort of way that is deemed unacceptable by baseball’s unwritten rules:
The inning before Bowa was ejected, Travis d’Arnaud ostentatiously flipped his bat after a bases-loaded walk, and perhaps that started Bowa’s blood boiling. It seemed pretty clearly accidental, though:
The best explanation might be that Larry Bowa is just an angry man. That’s the one Phillies manager Phil Mackanin is going with:
