Stanford Ends UConn's 47-Game Winning Streak In OT
UConn versus Stanford has been one of women's college basketball's best rivalries over the past decade, and tonight's contest was no exception. Down ten at home with just six-and-a-half minutes remaining, Amber Orrange had nine of the Cardinal final 22 points—including a game-tying three with just three seconds remaining in regulation—to send the game into overtime. Once again Stanford went down, but managed to hold the Huskies to two points over the final two-and-a-half minutes to take the contest 88-86 and snap UConn's 47-game winning streak.
Besides ending the winning streak, Stanford's win prevented UConn coach Geno Auriemma from overtaking Leon Barmore to become the winningest (by winning percentage) coach in women's college basketball history. This isn't the first time the Cardinal have ruined a UConn milestone: their win nearly four years ago snapped UConn's 90-game winning streak, the longest in college basketball (men's or women's) history. The Cardinal were also the last team to have beaten the Huskies before the 90-game winning streak began.
In the last seven years, the two teams have faced each other in the Final Four or later four different times, with UConn knocking Stanford out of the tournament on three of those occasions. It may well happen again this season.
UConn began the night ranked first in the nation, while Stanford was sixth.
