Texas QB David Ash Gives Up Football Due To Concussions
Texas coach Charlie Strong announced today that quarterback David Ash has given up football after suffering multiple concussions over his career. Ash is the second college football quarterback in a little over a week to give up the game because of concussions.
Ash's most recent concussion was suffered in the Longhorns' season opener against North Texas. While recovering a fumbled snap, Ash was hit on the helmet by North Texas defensive end Jarrian Roberts. Nobody noticed any concussion symptoms and Ash played the entire game, but a few hours later, he called trainers complaining of dizziness and a headache. Ash was held out of Texas's next two games against BYU and UCLA.
Ash's first concussion of three in the last year happened during the second game of the 2013 season against BYU. He came back two weeks later, only to suffer from concussions symptoms against Kansas State. Ash was then granted a medical redshirt by the NCAA and sat out the rest of the season, hoping to get healthy enough to resume his career. It appears that won't happen.
