The 13-year pro tested positive for the growth hormone ibutamoren, and SARM LGD-4033, which is used by bodybuilders to increase muscle, according to the league.
Thompson, who has averaged 3.8 points, 3.9 total rebounds and 1.1 assists in 36 games this season, has yet to comment publicly.
Players are typically subject to four random tests for PEDs during the season and two during the offseason, according to the collective bargaining agreement between the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association.
Damian Lillard and Donovan Mitchell were both tested after scoring 71 points in games in 2023.
Thompson was the fourth overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft and spent the first eight years of his career in Cleveland, where won a championship in 2016. He returned after stints with the Boston Celtics, Sacramento Kings, Indiana Pacers, Chicago Bulls, and Golden State Warriors.
The Cavs are currently in second in the Central Division and have won their last eight games straight. The next time that Thompson will be eligible to play will be in mid-March.
