With DJ Kitty Puppet And Wiggles Concert, The Rays Might Have MLB's Best Promotions
Tampa Bay's ownership group finds the extra two percent, as explained in Jonah Keri's recent book of the same title. They do the little things. They work on the margins.
What better example of the extra two percent than the DJ Kitty puppet, which was a giveaway for kids at Sunday's Rays-Cardinals game? Or the Wiggles concert that followed the game? It's cool, if kid-friendly, stuff, the likes of which the Yankees never give away, $1000 seats or not.
But Tampa Bay's having attendance problems, which agitates those of us with pure souls, those of us who can't fathom backing the Yankees or Red Sox. We worry that Tampa Bay might have to dismantle its team further, might have to send David Price to a big market in the near future. And that's no fun except in New York or Boston.
So we're delighted that the Wiggles and the DJ Kitty puppet brought Tampa Bay its biggest non-Yankees, non-home opener crowd of the year. Too bad it was only three quarters of capacity.
But Miranda Cosgrove, star of iCarly, will perform postgame on September 4. Hope springs eternal.
