Ex-NFL RB Michael Bennett Arrested For Alleged Forgery, Elder Abuse
Former NFL running back Michael Bennett was arrested in Petaluma, Ca. on Thursday and held on suspicion of forgery, elder abuse, grand theft, and burglary. Bennett allegedly took out more than $300,000 worth of fraudulent loans in his girlfriend’s parents’ names. The parents realized something fishy was going on after receiving mail notices for the loans in September.
Bennett is currently on probation for a 2012 fraud arrest in which he took out $200,000 in an illegal loan. In that case, he falsified his financial statements to reflect a $9,000,000 balance in an empty account. He was sentenced to 15 months by a federal judge. In 2008, Bennett got sued for beating someone up in an IHOP parking lot.
Bennett played 10 seasons in the NFL, for six teams, and he made one Pro Bowl. He cited financial desperation as the motivation for both crimes. This case is quite similar to that of Irving Fryar, who got five years for mortgage fraud last month.
