Fan Throws Banana On Pitch At Dani Alves, Who Promptly Eats The Banana
Someone threw a banana at Dani Alves during Barcelona's 3-2 win over Villareal in La Liga action today. Alves, not missing a beat, picked up the banana, ate it, and went about his business.
This isn't the first time Alves has encountered the racist element in soccer. He was taunted with monkey cheers during the Copa del Rey in 2013, and says it happens all the time in Spain.
After the game in 2013 he said racism at soccer games was a "lost war," but still wanted action.
Alves called for "drastic measures,'' including penalties against clubs. He said Spain should look to English soccer for an example to follow.
"The club or team should be fined,'' he said, but not with small fines. "It has to go beyond that.''
It remains to be seen what, if anything, will happen after this latest incident, but this was a pretty good fuck you on Alves's part.
