Florida State stifles Jacksonville in easy home win

Martin Somerville scored 23 points and Chauncey Wiggins added 16 to lead Florida State to an 87-63 nonconference win over Jacksonville on Monday in Tallahassee, Fla.

Alex Steen also had 11 points and nine rebounds for the Seminoles (7-6).

Robert McCray V had 10 assists for Florida State.

Chris Lockett Jr. led the Dolphins (5-8) with 18 points and seven rebounds.

Hayden Wood also had 13 points for Jacksonville.

The Seminoles led by 22 at halftime and used a 15-5 run to start the second half to put the game out of reach.

Somerville hit a 3-pointer in the run and Steen and Wiggins both had three-point plays to make it 56-26 with 16:10 left to play.

The Seminoles outrebounded the Dolphins 44-28 and outshot them 46 percent (28-of-61) to 40 percent (24-of-60).

Florida State dominated from the 3-point line, hitting 11-of-33. The Dolphins could only manage 5-of-31 from behind the arc.


The Seminoles used a 23-5 run over 8:25 midway through the first half to take control of the game.

Somerville led the charge with three 3-pointers, including a four-point play. His third trey made it 27-7 with 8:34 left.

The Dolphins went scoreless for more than five minutes and missed all seven of their shots from the field.

Evan Sterck slowed the run with a 3-pointer and Charles Caporaso scored on a layup to cut Florida State's lead to 27-12.

Thomas Bassong started another streak for the Seminoles with a three-point play and Kobe MaGee had a 3-point play of his own for a 33-12 lead.

Steen made it 35-12 with a layup before the Dolphins used a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 16 with 2:30 left.

The Seminoles went right back at it, however, outscoring the Dolphins 8-2 in the final 1:18 to lead 43-21 at the break.

Wiggins and Lajae Jones put an exclamation point on the half with back-to-back 3-pointers.

Somerville finished the first half with 13 and McCray had five assists.
