Former Bronco Says He Played While High In 2007
Former Broncos left tackle Matt Lepsis said he played the first six games of his last season in football under the influence of drugs. Lepsis, who retired at the end of last season, never failed a drug test during his 11 years in the NFL, but says he practiced that way 10 to 15 times before actually doing it in a game. Lepsis retired after knee injuries in 2006 and 2007, which is amazing really, because Broncos linemen are usually responsible for ending everyone else's careers.
"The first thing I did when I woke up in the morning was get high, and I would try to stay that way all day long," said Lepsis, who won't say what drugs he used. [...]
"I look back on it, and it was really foolish of me," Lepsis said. "There were definitely times when I wasn't even really there. I was physically there, but I was in another place mentally."
Lepsis understands that he was being self-destructive, but he didn't feel that way at the time.
Lepsis didn't specify the drugs he was taking by name, but said that he started taking them recreationally after his first knee injury in '06. He retired after finding Jesus in '07 and is currently attending Dallas Theological Seminary. It goes to show how often these athletes, with all their money and fame, are still searching for fulfillment in their lives like so many other people.
But I don't know why he stopped getting high. Getting high is awesome.
