The school announced that Meyer was surrounded by family on Friday but did not reveal a cause of death.
After playing for the Blue Demons when they were coached by his father, Basketball Hall of Famer Ray Meyer, Joey Meyer became an assistant coach at the school and ultimately succeeded his father in the top job.
Joey Meyer led the Blue Demons from 1984-85 through 1996-97, guiding the program to the NCAA Tournament in seven of his first eight seasons. His best postseason results were Sweet 16 appearances in 1986 and 1987.
In 13 seasons as head coach, Joey Meyer compiled a 231-158 record. His win total stands second behind Ray Meyer's 724 on the school's all-time list.
Joey Meyer was born in Chicago and was a high school star at DePaul Academy. He still sits on DePaul's all-time leaderboards for scoring average and field goals made.
Following his coaching career, he served as a broadcaster and was a regional scout for the Los Angeles Clippers.
