Mandatory Credit: Ed Mulholland-Imagn Images Former longtime NHL general manager Ray Shero, who passed away in April at age 62, will be honored with the 2025 Lester Patrick Trophy during the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame induction ceremony in December.
Shero's two runs as a general manager included 2006-14 with the Pittsburgh Penguins, who won the Stanley Cup in 2009, as well as 2015-20 with the New Jersey Devils. He most recently was an advisor for the Minnesota Wild from 2021 until his death.
He is a former associate general manager of the U.S. Olympic team (2014) and was an assistant general manager with both the Ottawa Senators and Nashville Predators. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982 but never played in the NHL.
"... His true legacy will be as a man who embodied the best of our game: fierce competition on the ice and welcoming fellowship off the ice," NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said in a release. "Widely respected throughout hockey for his team-building acumen and eye for talent, he was even more beloved for how he treated everyone fortunate enough to have known him."
Shero will be remembered and honored Dec. 10 at Saint Paul, Minn., with a U.S. Hall of Fame Hockey class that includes Bruce Bennett, Scott Gomez, Tara Mounsey, Zach Parise and Joe Pavelski.
Shero died April 9 in Chandler, Ariz., following a brief illness. His sons Chris and Kyle are scouts for the Columbus Blue Jackets and Philadelphia Flyers, respectively.
