Giants Elect Not To Fill Their Obvious Need At QB
With the 20th pick of the NFL Draft, the New York Giants select Aaron Ross, CB, Texas. Mike Tanier of Football Outsiders tells you all about it.
Howlin' Tom Coughlin has a way with rookies. He screams at them on the sidelines. He blames them for his own coaching shortcomings. He exposes them bare-backed to the sadistic New York media. NFL ready rookies like Eli Manning struggle to cope with Coughlin. Long-term projects like Mathias Kiwanuka, thrown into the lineup unprepared, struggle to cope with Coughlin. By midseason, Ross may actually envy Brady Quinn.
At least Ross won't have to start right away. Sam Madison and Corey Webster can play for another year. Sure, they spent much of last season smothered in creamed chip beef, but Madison and Webster should last until the end of Coughlin's tenure with the team. In 2008, Ross will be ready to play.
Ross is a smart, disciplined defender with great straight-line speed. He doesn't have great lateral quickness, and he can get turned around on double moves, but Ross can shake off adversity. He's a good pick, but the Giants needed a great pick if they hope to do anything besides wallow in their Tiki-less crapulence this season.
