Greg Maddux And Tom Glavine Came Up With "Chicks Dig The Long Ball"
It's been 16 years since Wieden+Kennedy's famous Nike ad featuring Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, and Mark McGwire, so some of you might actually be too young to remember it. If so, take it in (the rest of us don't mind watching it again):
It is still very much a great spot, but nothing dates it quite like the fawning and unquestioning adoration of dingers. (This might be the single most 1998 ad.)
It's endured largely thanks to its iconic tagline. And at a roundtable at Hall of Fame weekend (MLB.com just put the video online this week), Greg Maddux explained that the original script wasn't nearly so memorable.
"The director was some foreign guy from Amsterdam or whatever, and he goes, 'well, we want you to say something like: girls really like home runs.'
"And we're like, 'that's not how we talk. We wouldn't say that.'
"'Well, what would you say?'
"We'd say, 'chicks dig the long ball.'"
