Smart, whom the Grizzlies acquired in June in a three-team trade that included the Boston Celtics and the Washington Wizards, left Tuesday's game against the Lakers in Los Angeles with the foot injury. He scored three points in about 8 1/2 minutes.
It's just the latest in a string of injuries for the Grizzlies, who also are playing without star guard Ja Morant. The guard is serving a 25-game suspension in the aftermath of two episodes of displaying a gun.
Center Steven Adams has been lost for the season with a knee injury, Brandon Clarke is recovering from an Achilles tear, and several others are dealing with lesser issues.
The Grizzlies have begun the season 2-9 and are last in the Southwest Division. Their next game is Saturday night in San Antonio.
In 11 games this season, all as a starter, Smart is averaging 12.5 points, five assists and two steals in just under 30 minutes. He won the Defensive Player of the Year Award for the 2021-22 season.
Smart played for the Celtics for his first nine NBA seasons, and has career averages of 10.6 points, 4.7 assists and 1.6 steals.
