Guardians rally to tie in 9th, down Tigers in 10th on walkoff
Brayan Rocchio delivered a game-winning single in the 10th inning as the host Cleveland Guardians defeated the Detroit Tigers 5-4 on Wednesday afternoon.
The Guardians rallied for the win with single runs in each of the last three innings.
After Detroit failed to score in the top of the 10th, Tyler Freeman advanced automatic runner Ramon Laureano to third with a sacrifice. Rocchio then singled to center on the first pitch from Alex Lang for the walk-off win.
David Fry hit a game-tying home run in the ninth as the Guardians took two of three games in the series. Austin Hedges added a two-run single, while Kyle Manzardo singled in the seventh for his first major league hit.
Emmanuel Clase (2-1) picked up the win by pitching a scoreless 10th. Starter Tanner Bibee gave up four runs on five hits in four innings and struck out five.
Detroit starter Reese Olson limited the Guardians to two runs (one earned) and one hit in six innings. Lange (0-2) took the loss.
Colt Keith drove in two runs for Detroit, while Kerry Carpenter added two doubles and a run.
After Bibee struck out the side in the first inning, his teammates staked him to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second.
Josh Naylor led off with a walk, and an error by second baseman Andy Ibanez allowed Fry to reach second and Naylor to advance to third. Will Brennan walked to load the bases and, one out later, Hedges got the only hit off Olson, a single to plate Naylor and Fry.
Detroit broke through against Bibee in the fourth. Ibanez led off with a single and moved to third on Carpenter's one-out double. Keith knocked both runners in by smacking a single past second baseman Andres Gimenez. After Spencer Torkelson was hit by a pitch, Zach McKinstry followed with a double to score Keith. Torkelson scored the fourth run on Javier Baez's sacrifice fly.
Rocchio singled off Joey Wentz to lead off the bottom of the eighth. He stole second and advanced to third on catcher Jake Rogers' throwing error. Gimenez then made it 4-3 with an RBI groundout.
Fry tied the contest with his opposite field homer off Andrew Chafin with one out in the ninth.
