Has Any Player Been Screwed On Deadline Day As Badly As Danny Granger?
When Danny Granger woke up yesterday, he played for the Pacers (41-13), one of the best teams in the NBA. By the end of the day, he played for the 76ers (15-40), one of the worst. That's a drop in winning percentage of nearly 50 points. Getting traded midseason is always, in the words of Marcin Gortat, " a pain in the ass," but has any player moved as far down the ladder on deadline day as Granger?
Dating back to 1950, 428 players have been moved on the final day of NBA trading ( check out the full list). Here are the 10 deals* that resulted in the biggest such drop in winning percentage for the player(s) traded:
Gary Freeman, 1971. Milwaukee (44-9) to Cleveland (10-48); 65.8-point drop.
Semih Erden and Luke Harangody, 2011. Boston (41-14) to Cleveland (10-47); 57-point drop.
Russ Schoene, 1983. Philadelphia (43-7) to Indiana (15-35); 56-point drop.
Jason Caffey, 1998. Chicago (39-15) to Golden State (10-41); 52.6-point drop.
Jeff Turner, 1996. Orlando (39-14) to Vancouver (11-40); 52-point drop.
Malik Allen, 2005. Miami (40-16) to Charlotte (11-40); 49.9-point drop.
Marquis Daniels, 2011. Boston (41-14) to Sacramento (14-41); 49.1-point drop.
Danny Granger, 2014. Indiana (41-13) to Philadelphia (15-40); 48.7-point drop.
Adonal Foyle and Mike Wilks, 2009. Orlando (39-14) to Memphis (15-39); 45.8-point drop.
Don May, 1973. Atlanta (29-26) to Philadelphia (4-51); 45.5-point drop.
*Excluding the lockout season of 1999; teams had played less than 20 games when the extended trade deadline hit.
Granger comes in eighth, but you might notice that most of these guys were pretty bad; Gary Freeman was traded as a rookie, and clocked just 47 minutes in Cleveland before his career ended (he also had the misfortune, like Jason Caffey, of watching his former team win a championship). Granger hasn't performed at a high level in a couple years, but he's the only player on this list to have made an All-Star game, and from 2007-08 to 2011-12 he was undeniably an effective NBA starter.
What's even more impressive/sad for Granger is that he's just the sixth player to be shipped out of Indiana on deadline day, joining Jerome Allen, Vincent Askew, and Eddie Johnson (1997, to Denver), Clemon Johnson (1983, to Philly), and Darnell Hillman (1977, to the Nets). The Pacers have exchanged only 14 total players on the final day of trading, the fewest of any team in the NBA. Here's the full list, covering the complete history of each franchise:
