Bey departed Sunday's 116-103 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans with what the team initially termed a hyperextended left knee. He underwent an MRI exam on Monday and the tear was detected.
Bey will undergo surgery at a time still to be determined.
Bey, 24, is averaging 13.7 points and 6.5 rebounds in 63 games (51 starts) this season.
In four NBA seasons, Bey has career averages of 14.1 points and 5.2 rebounds in 292 games (223 starts). He was a first-round choice (19th overall) in the 2020 draft and spent 2 1/2 seasons with the Pistons before being dealt to Atlanta 13 months ago.
The loss of Bey comes at a time when star guard Trae Young (left pinkie) and big man Onyeka Okongwu (left big toe) are sidelined for the Hawks, who currently are in 10th place to hold the Eastern Conference's final play-in spot.
