Hector "Macho" Camacho Is Dead At 50
Despite doctors' initial belief that Hector "Macho" Camacho would make a full recovery from a shooting earlier this week in Puerto Rico, the boxer died early this morning after being taken off life support.
Camacho was shot by unknown gunmen while sitting in a parked car with his friend, Adrian Mojica Moreno, who was also killed. Several bags of cocaine were found on Moreno's body, though it's not known if the shooting was drug-related. Camacho held titles in three weight classes during his career, and is the father of boxer Hector Jr., who makes an appearance in ESPN's excellent tribute:
And after he knocked out Leonard, a fight that had a particularly nasty buildup, Camacho showed up at the postfight news conference with his son, who could have been no older than 6, on his lap.
In the middle of the presser, the boy piped up with, "Daddy, you were right. Ray fought like a little sissy."
Camacho, clearly embarrassed, said gently, "No, no, Papi, the fight's over now. We don't say things like that no more."
