Here's Gus Johnson Calling The San Jose Earthquakes' Exciting Last-Second Win
We heard last week from our friends at Awful Announcing that excitable announcer Gus Johnson had picked up the strange gig of calling MLS games on radio for the San Jose Earthquakes. We tuned in tonight, and were not disappointed. While our emeritus editor Will Leitch has concluded that Johnson's become a terrible announcer, we think his bombasticism is fitting for a sport in which results can hinge on a single play.
That happened tonight, as San Jose overcame a late Union equalizer to score in added time and take home a road 2-1 win at Philadelphia. We've got your relevant goal calls above, but as for his overall performance, Johnson did pretty well. He had some terminology issues, and mispronounced the "Real" in "Real Salt Lake" (saying it in the manner one would to differentiate from an ersatz Salt Lake) but the energy he brought to the goal calls—and avoiding the cliched "GOOOOOOOL!!!!"— suggest Johnson may have a future in calling the sport.
