Hey, Hockey's Back!

We used to work for a sports magazine, and one of our favorite people there was an older guy named Ray. Ray was the biggest hockey fan we knew; just being around him made you want to grow a mullet. Every year, when the hockey playoffs were about to start, he would call everyone into a conference room and show us 10 minutes of Slap Shot; specifically, the five minutes where everyone is just beating the crap out of each other. Everyone left the room so fired up we started checking each other into the cubicle walls. It ruled.

We don't quite have the same level of excitement today, as the NHL plays real-live games for the first time since June 7, 2004. But it'll still be fun. The rule changes have been massive, the teams are all re-shuffled and somehow teams from Calgary, Tampa and Hartford (wait, they don't have a team anymore, sorry) can actually compete with the New York teams. Like most casual hockey fans, we're just rooting for a ton of shootouts and a ton of fights. Pretty much all you need to know about the start of the season can be found at the great Off Wing Opinion. And remember: The Outdoor Life Network, if you want to find it, is somewhere in the triple digits on your cable. Should be somewhere around the Al Gore news network.
