One More Clueless L.A. Media Moment: "Kings Goalie Jonathan Swift"
The Stanley Cup itself will be at the Staples Center tonight, and the Kings look all but unstoppable. (Up 3-0, Kings merchandise is flying off the shelves, because L.A. is filled with more bandwagoners per capita than any other North American city.) You'd think by now the local media would have go...
Why Is No One Watching The Stanley Cup Finals?
It's not news that Stanley Cup Finals ratings are utterly abysmal, but here we are talking about them again because it's another year and the NHL has decided to hold another annual round of playoffs. Hooray for us, because the hockey has been really great! But not so good for NBC, which saw Games 1 ...
The Canadiens Have Hired Michel Therrien So He Can Fail Again
Hockey is the only thing that keeps Canadians from committing mass suicide during drawn-out winters. And perhaps no one has been so close to suicide lately as the people of Montreal. When the Habs stumbled to a 13-12-7 start this season, head coach Jacques Martin was canned and replaced with interim...
The L.A. Kings Taunted The Devils With Giant Jersey Shore Cutouts Yesterday
We already knew that the L.A. Kings were the most fun team to make it to the Stanley Cup Finals in recent memory, thanks in large part to the team's playful and hilarious Twitter feed and their unique style of play. They're also probably the best team to make it to the Stanley Cup finals in a while—...
The Porn Actor Who Dismembered His Lover And Mailed Body Parts To Politicians? He Made This Sergei Fedorov Tribute Video
Luka Magnotta was a sometime gay porn actor and male escort. He posted a series of videos showing himself killing kittens. He killed an acquaintance, also on video, and cut him up, eating some pieces and mailing others to political parties. He was on HFBoards. Of course he was on HFBoards....
Hockey Killed Derek Boogaard
Hockey doesn't show up on a toxicology report. The coroner will tell you that it was too much alcohol and too much oxycodone that stopped Boogaard's heart on an early morning last May, and the NHL will tell you the same. But it was hockey that caused Boogaard to turn to pills, hockey that caused him...
How The Kings Toughened Up And Conquered The NHL
There are two central oddities in the New Jersey Devils-Los Angeles Kings Stanley Cup final, which the Kings lead 2-0 after two overtime wins. One is that the Kings were an eight seed with a meager plus-15 goal differential during the regular season, an eight seed that went 5-2-3 in its last 10 game...
Now A New York TV Station Thinks The Islanders Are Playing The Kings In The Stanley Cup Finals
Media ignorance to the NHL playoffs continues, as tonight's 6 p.m. WABC newscast featured a graphic not only suggesting the New York Islanders were in the Stanley Cup Finals but text to that effect as well. As inexcusable as the various mistakes made in identifying the Kings by Los Angeles media af...
Don Cherry Picks The Kings To Win The Cup Because They Have Fewer European Players
Last year, an academic study tapped Don Cherry as the new face of Canadian Nationalism. The world recoiled in horror, not least of all Canadians themselves. (I know. I asked them all.) But Grapes's geographical jingoism is something you kind of have to tune out, because at least it doesn't affect hi...
Rex Ryan: New Jersey Devils Fan
New York Jets coach Rex Ryan and family took in last night's opening game of the Stanley Cup Finals, garbed in Devils jerseys and ready for action. Alas, the Kings took Game One 2-1 in overtime, but we're not entirely sure how much Ryan's behind the Devils anyway—he grew up a Maple Leafs fan in Tor...
Report: The Blackhawks Have Suggested That Patrick Kane Seek Counseling
Three weeks back, we shared with you a reconstruction of Patrick Kane's drunken Cinco de Mayo weekend in Wisconsin. Kane, sources told us, was thrown out of bars and frat houses, for, among other things, choking a girl and making anti-Semitic comments. The cops were involved, at one point, but he wa...
Today In Getting To Know The Kings: Reebok Offers An "Alex Kopitar" Shirt
This hockey thing's new; we get it. But despite the team's best efforts, we're still not all on the same page. Take this Reebok "Stanley Cup Finals Alex Kopitar" t-shirt, now available in the NHL.com shop. (He's also "Alex" at other outlets offering the same shirt, so this is a Reebok problem, not a...
NBC Bans Rangers And Devils Viewing Parties, Because TV Money Rules All
Fire And Ice reports that NBC will not allow the Devils to have a viewing party at the Prudential Center for tonight's game, nor the Rangers to do the same thing at the Garden on Friday. This despite both teams having viewing parties earlier in the series. What changed? Well, TV numbers have been co...
Hate Hockey? Hate Women? The CBC's Women-Only Stanley Cup Feed Is For You
Canadian national broadcaster CBC announced today the network's Stanley Cup Finals coverage will include an alternate audio channel featuring Lena Sutherland and Jules Mancuso of While The Men Watch, a site dedicated to "sports commentary that women actually want to hear."...
Dustin Brown Should Either Be Suspended For Zero Games Or For All The Games
Late in the first overtime, LA's Dustin Brown took down Phoenix's Michal Roszival at the blue line. Roszival was hurt; the Coyotes were angry; there was no penalty called. Twelve seconds later, Dustin Penner scored. Game, series, conference....
Claude Giroux Played Beer Pong With Casts On Both Wrists
Claude Giroux is still the postseason points and goals leader, despite being eliminated two weeks ago. Last week he had surgery on both wrists—bone spurs in one, torn cartilage in the other. That didn't stop him from tearing up Philly over the weekend, an odyssey nobly chronicled by Crossing Broad. ...
The L.A. Kings Created A Handy Infographic So The City's Media Will Know Who They Are
We've already tipped our caps to the social-media prowess of the Los Angeles Kings and their outstanding Twitter feed, @LAKings. And here they go again, staying ahead of the narrative as only they can....
Here Are The Sean Avery Semi-Nude Modeling Photos You Didn't Know You Wanted
Brandon Prust is serving a one-game suspension for a headhunting elbow. Brandon Dubinsky isn't ready to return from injury, nor is Mats Zuccarello. The Rangers need a better option for a fourth line forward tonight than Stu Bickel, who's usually a defenseman. If only they had someone still under con...
The Los Angeles Media Market Continues To Not Know The L.A. Kings Play Hockey
There are two major sports teams in California named the Kings. One of them is up north in Sacramento, and they play professional basketball (poorly, as of late). The other is in Los Angeles, and has a very good shot at winning the Stanley Cup. Despite the two franchises' differences in performan...
"The Kings Have The Ball": More Hockey Coverage From Los Angeles
You do have to feel for FOX 11's newslady. Hockey highlights are tough if you've never watched a hockey game. Kopitar and Doughty aren't easy names to pronounce. But in the wake of another LA station's Kings ignorance, it's entirely possible that a team is going to win a Stanley Cup without anyone...
