Is the UFC's BMF Belt Actually Bad for Business?

When the UFC introduced the BMF belt in 2019, it was supposed to be a gimmick.

Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz weren't fighting for a traditional championship at UFC 244. They were fighting for bragging rights, and the UFC decided that it deserved its own piece of hardware.

Six years later, the BMF belt is still here. And somehow, fans actually care about it. That might be exactly why the UFC has a problem.

It Was Never Supposed to Be This Serious

The original BMF fight worked because it didn't pretend to be something it wasn't.

Masvidal and Diaz were two of the biggest personalities in the UFC, and the belt gave their fight something tangible to fight for. Masvidal won the inaugural championship, and the concept could have ended there.

Instead, the UFC kept bringing it back.

Justin Gaethje won it from Dustin Poirier. Max Holloway took it from Gaethje. Charles Oliveira then defeated Holloway to become the latest BMF champion.

Suddenly, the joke belt had a lineage. And that creates an interesting question: When does a gimmick become a championship?

The BMF Belt Doesn't Follow the Rules

The UFC's traditional championship system is relatively simple.Win fights, climb the rankings, beat the champion and become the champion.

The BMF belt doesn't really work that way. It's about personality, reputation, violence and marketability. That's not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, it's probably the reason the belt has survived.

But it can create some strange matchmaking situations.

A fighter could be one win away from competing for an undisputed UFC championship, while another fighter could be offered a BMF fight that makes considerably more money and attracts far more attention. Which one are they supposed to choose?

That's where the BMF belt could potentially become bad for business.

The UFC has spent decades establishing its championships as the ultimate prize in MMA. The BMF belt introduces another trophy that sometimes feels more important to fans than the actual rankings.

But Here's the Problem With Calling It Bad

The UFC is a business. And the BMF belt sells fights.That's the entire point.

Masvidal-Diaz was enormous. Gaethje-Poirier II had built-in history. Gaethje-Holloway produced one of the most memorable knockouts in UFC history.

Oliveira-Holloway gave two elite veterans another massive stage. The BMF belt doesn't necessarily replace the UFC championship. It gives the promotion another tool to create fights that might otherwise be difficult to justify.

And that's incredibly valuable.

Now Charles Oliveira Has Made It Even More Interesting

Oliveira's BMF reign could be where the belt enters its next phase. He's not some novelty fighter being handed a fake championship.

He's a former undisputed UFC lightweight champion and one of the most accomplished fighters in the division's history.

If he defends the BMF belt against someone like Paddy Pimblett, suddenly the fight becomes much bigger than a standard matchup.

Paddy gets a chance to win UFC gold. Oliveira gets to defend his status as one of the division's toughest fighters.

And the UFC gets another major event without needing an undisputed championship involved. So, Is the BMF Belt Bad for Business?

Probably not.

Not yet, anyway.

The BMF belt becomes a problem only if the UFC allows it to blur the importance of its actual championships.

For now, it's doing something the UFC desperately needs: creating fights based on personality and entertainment, not just rankings.

The BMF belt was never supposed to matter. But it does.

And maybe that's the funniest part.

The UFC created a gimmick, fans turned it into a real championship, and now the promotion has to figure out what to do with it.
