It Rains Because Jack Nicklaus Hates Leatherlips
This image was lost some time after publication. It's raining at Muirfield Village this week, site of the PGA's Memorial Tournament. Yesterday's rain delay lasted over six hours, in fact, and a lot of players had to get out early this morning and finish the second round. It's rained 21 times in 31 years at The Memorial. Wow, that seems like a lot. I wonder why...
Well, I guess that's what happens when you screw with Chief Leatherlips of the Wyandot tribe. Jack Nicklaus built the course, as it turns out, over sacred Indian burial ground. I guess the spirits don't like it when Jim Furyk takes huge divots right over someone's corpse. Once in 1993, acting on the apparent assumption that Chief Leatherlips was a raging alcoholic, Jack's wife tried to make peace with the Chief by leaving a shot of gin on his grave. And it just kept on raining, because I guess Chief Leatherlips doesn't like it to be assumed that he's a drunk. Hm. Indian Chiefs can be so temperamental sometimes.
The second round is all finished up this morning, and Phil Mickelson is 3 shots back of your leader, Carl Pettersson. Today's forecast is calling for Scattered Thunderstorms, by the way.
