Mandatory Credit: Rafael Suanes-USA TODAY Sports James Wood had a three-run triple, Luis Garcia Jr. homered for the second straight game and Mitchell Parker pitched six shutout innings to help the Washington Nationals defeat the visiting Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 on Sunday afternoon.
The Nationals fended off another late push by the Brewers to win twice in the now-concluded three-game series. They also won the earlier three-game series against Milwaukee last month.
After struggling offensively for most of the game, Milwaukee scored three runs off of Washington reliever Robert Garcia in the top of the eighth inning. William Contreras had a RBI, when he grounded into a fielder's choice with runners at the corners. Gary Sanchez followed up with a two-run blast, his eighth home run of the season.
The Nationals led 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth when they loaded the bases on three singles. Washington's James Wood then smashed a liner into left field just outside of the diving reach of Milwaukee's Jackson Chourio for a three-run triple.
Garcia stayed hot at the plate and hit a first-inning solo home run, his 13th of the season, to give Washington the early lead.
After getting pulled before completing a single inning against the Brewers on July 13, his only other career start against Milwaukee, Parker (6-6) had a much better showing on the mound. He limited the Brewers to just three hits over six scoreless innings. He also recorded three strikeouts and three walks in the win.
Kyle Finnegan recorded his 30th save of the season, ending the game by getting Brice Turang to hit into a double play.
Milwaukee's Tobias Myers (6-5) picked up the loss after pitching five innings. He gave up one earned run on four hits, while striking out two batters and walking one.
The Brewers grounded into double plays in the first, third and ninth innings. They also left a runner stranded on third base, when it was a 1-0 game in the top of the fifth.
