Mandatory Credit: David Butler II-Imagn Images New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields, who has missed the last three games with a knee issue, will move to injured reserve for the team's final two games this season.
"We tried to see how we could get this to work, but it wasn't getting better as we would like it," Jets coach Aaron Glenn said on Tuesday, "so we want to make sure we get a focus on that and make sure we get him better."
Fields, 26, has not played since Week 11, when the Jets suffered a 27-14 road loss to the New England Patriots on Nov. 13. He went 2-7 as a starter in his first season with the Jets, completing 62.7% of his passes for 1,259 yards, seven touchdowns and one interception that netted an 89.5 quarterback rating -- the second-best of his five-year career. He also rushed 71 times for 383 yards and four scores.
He averaged 139.9 passing yards per game. Fields threw for less than 55 yards in four games, including 27 on 3-for-11 passing in a 30-10 home loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sept. 14.
Fields lost his starting job to well-traveled veteran Tyrod Taylor, 36, who also has been hurt. Undrafted rookie Brady Cook, 24, is in line to make his third straight start on Sunday against the visiting Patriots (12-3).
The Jets (3-12) signed Fields in March to a two-year, $40 million contract -- $30 million guaranteed -- in free agency after he failed to establish himself as a franchise quarterback with the Chicago Bears or Pittsburgh Steelers.
Chicago selected Fields with the 11th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft out of Ohio State. They traded him to Pittsburgh for a 2025 sixth-round pick in March 2024.
Fields owns a 16-37 record as a starter in his 59 regular-season games. He has compiled 9,039 passing yards, 52 touchdowns and 32 interceptions as well as 2,892 rushing yards and 23 TDs.
