Jose Urquidy, White Sox blank Cubs to salvage series finale

Jose Urquidy struck out eight batters over six scoreless innings and Braden Montgomery ripped a two-run double, fueling the visiting Chicago White Sox to a 3-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday afternoon.

Andrew Benintendi opened the scoring with an RBI single in the sixth inning.

Miguel Vargas and Montgomery each had two of the nine hits for the White Sox, who salvaged the finale of the three-game series and gained a split the six-game season set versus the Cubs.

Urquidy (2-1) relieved starter Sean Newcomb and struck out eight of the first 10 batters he faced.

Urquidy yielded two hits -- both to Tyrone Taylor, including a double to lead off the sixth inning. Taylor, however, was erased after an unsuccessful tag-up attempt following a liner to right field by Pete Crow-Armstrong. Montgomery set his feet in right field and fired a dart to third base to get Taylor by a comfortable margin.

White Sox left fielder Sam Antonacci made a leaping catch at the wall to deny Alex Bregman of potential extra bases to begin the seventh inning.

Grant Taylor struck out a pair of batters in the ninth inning to secure his seventh save of the season.

The Cubs had no fireworks left after defeating the White Sox in their final at-bat in each of the first two games of the series.

The White Sox opened the scoring in the sixth inning, as Vargas led off with a ground-rule double against Clay Holmes (5-6) and scored on Benintendi's single to center field.

The White Sox padded their lead in the eighth inning.

Vargas worked a one-out walk off Ryan Rolison and advanced to third base on Randal Grichuk's double. Both runners came home after Montgomery's liner caromed off the glove of first baseman Michael Busch and into right field.

Holmes permitted one run on six hits in 5 1/3 innings, walking two and striking out one.
