Justin Thomas Breaks U.S. Open Record In Bonkers Third Round

Justin Thomas, wearer of sweet pink pants and nailer of wild curving birdie putts, set a PGA Tour record with his 9-under 63 on Saturday, the lowest score in relation to par in the history of the U.S. Open.

The third round at Erin Hills was bananas. Everyone near the top had it going. Thomas’s monster round was capped by that eagle on 18, and featured just two bogies, and he still finished the day a shot off the lead. No one who is not named Patrick Reed will remember that Reed, sitting tied for seventh place at 8-under, was a narrow bogey on five away from tying the previous U.S. Open low round of 8-under, set by Johnny Miller in 1973, and broken by Thomas. Leader Brian Harman starts Sunday at 12-under after shooting a clean -5 on Saturday, and the highlight of his day involved him talking a pair of alligators into a pond (CORRECTION: The alligator video is from a tournament in Florida. No player within eight shots of the lead has ever won a major before, meaning only something really, really dramatic will prevent the U.S. Open from crowning a first-time major champion today.
