Kansas' Bill Self 'feeling much better,' will not coach vs. Colorado
Kansas Jayhawks head coach Bill Self yells out during the game against Baylor Bears inside Allen Fieldhouse on Jan. 16, 2026. Kansas head coach Bill Self acknowledged that he is "feeling much better" on Tuesday, one day after he was taken the hospital.
Assistant coach Jacque Vaughn will be the acting bench boss for the 19th-ranked Jayhawks (13-5, 3-2 Big 12) in Tuesday's game against Colorado (12-6, 2-3) in Boulder, Colo.
Self, 63, was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital and received IV fluids Monday. It is not known what led to Self's hospitalization or how long he will be away from the team.
"I'm feeling much better and I want to thank the well-wishers and the great team at LMH Health," Self said in a statement Tuesday. "I'll be sitting out tonight's game, and as I've said before, we have an elite coaching staff at KU, and I know our players are in good hands in Boulder."
Self has dealt with health episodes in recent years, most notably before the 2023 Big 12 tournament. He was hospitalized with chest tightness, had two stents inserted to address blocked arteries and missed five games in all, including the Big 12 tournament and the NCAA Tournament.
Last July, Self was admitted to Lawrence Memorial Hospital with what the program at the time called "some concerning symptoms" and received two more stents.
Self has won two national championships (2008, 2022) and taken Kansas to four Final Fours since being hired in 2003. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2017.
