LeBron James’ Next Team Is Obvious, Even if Prediction Markets Say Otherwise

LeBron James and Rich Paul have dropped their suitors to a final three: Cleveland, Miami, and Philadelphia. Of course, as this circus continues, things could easily change, but I feel the decision has been made for weeks.

Prediction markets have Cleveland and Miami both floating around the same odds, with a 37% chance of returning to one of his former teams on Tuesday. On Wednesday, after the Heat social media team accidentally leaked a YouTube livestream link for LeBron's introductory press conference, which was a mistake, but caused Miami surged on Kalshi. Golden State still has higher odds than Philadelphia, but recent reporting has shown that LeBron is likely to sign in the Eastern Conference.

From the perspective of trying to win one more ring, that makes the most sense. Yes, the defending champion Knicks are in the East, but the rest of the conference is wide open. The prevailing sentiment is that Cleveland is the worst basketball fit for LeBron, but will be the best legacy decision for him. I know this iteration of the Cavs has continually underperformed in the playoffs, but I still think they might be the best tactical match for him as well.

On paper, the two best players for him to be paired up with next year are Giannis Antetokounmpo and Joel Embiid. They would undeniably be two of the most talented teammates he’s ever partnered with, but what kind of availability is he getting out of them?

Miami is currently the betting favorite, but I think they’re a horrible fit for LeBron. Norman Powell and Tyler Herro were the only consistent floor spacers for the Heat, and they’re now both gone. Tim Hardaway Jr. was a very underrated signing to add some spacing, but beyond him, it gets pretty bleak.

Philadelphia at least has shooting threats all over the place with Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, and Embiid, plus potential development from VJ Edgecombe, but they still lack any serious depth.

Cleveland checks every box imaginable. James Harden and Donovan Mitchell can handle a lot of the scoring load, especially in the regular season. Jarrett Allen is an awesome rim-runner, and Evan Mobley is one of the most versatile defensive options in basketball. That’s not even considering Max Strus and Sam Merrill as shooting options off the bench.

The way Cleveland exited the playoffs left a sour taste in most of our mouths, but this has been one of the better teams in basketball the last two years. Replacing a “Dean Wade” with a LeBron James makes this team an instant title threat. Unfortunately, we’re all just living in LeBron’s world, and we have to wait for him to make the most obvious decision just so he can squeeze a little more juice out of the attention lemon he’s been squeezing his entire career.
