LeBron James Wears Unique Jersey Patch as Retirement Questions Loom
On Monday, the NBA announced that Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James will wear a different jersey than everyone else in the league for the remainder of the season.
James will wear a special-edition 23rd season jersey patch beginning Monday night in Sacramento; the city where he began his legendary career in 2003.
The patches will be removed from his jersey after each game, and some will be placed into ultra-rare Topps sports cards.
The patch showcases James’ famous powder toss pregame ritual with nods to the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and Lakers – all three teams that James has played for during his 23 seasons in the NBA.
This is starting to feel like the beginning of the end for James, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent following the season. While the newly-turned 24-year-old has never given a straight answer about when he will retire from the NBA, a specialized jersey patch feels like the beginning of the end.
For many NBA fans, it’s difficult to fathom a world where James doesn’t participate in a highly-publicized farewell tour. Fellow NBA legends such as Kobe Bryant and Dwyane Wade made it known before they were playing in their final seasons, while some other stars like Tim Duncan chose to retire quietly.
The issue for James is that the Lakers do not seem like they want him back for a farewell tour next season.
The team didn’t consult him on their blockbuster trade for Luka Doncic last season. They also did not entertain contract negotiations with James, who picked up his player option to remain in Los Angeles this season. It’s clear that the Lakers want to build around Doncic, which puts James in an unfamiliar and uncomfortable position.
James playing for a fourth team would feel wrong.
Maybe he could orchestrate a triumphant return to the Heat or the Cavaliers for a farewell tour if either team flames out in the NBA Playoffs, because it certainly doesn’t sound like the ceremonies will be happening in Los Angeles.
Maybe James just takes his jersey patch and goes home after this season. No Nike ads. No commercials.
The Lakers are currently the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference and could be a legitimate title contender depending on the consistency of contributions from others not named James or Doncic.
Regardless of how this season ends, James has nothing left to prove. He’s retiring as the NBA’s all-time leading scorer as a pass-first player. He’s won titles with three different organizations. He became the first father and son duo to share an NBA court.
Team ownership, charity work, Hollywood, or quite literally any combination of those endeavors that James wants to pursue after his legendary career will await him with or without a farewell tour.
