Lindsey Vonn hooks gate, doesn't finish race at skiing worlds
Dec 15, 2024; Beaver Creek, CO, USA; Lindsey Vonn of the United States reacts in the finish area after competing as a forerunner in the women's super G race for the 2024 Stifel Birds of Prey Audi FIS alpine skiing World Cup at Birds of Prey. Mandatory Credit: Michael Madrid-Imagn Images Lindsey Vonn was unable to finish Thursday's super-G due to a right shoulder injury sustained when she hooked a gate early in her run in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Austria.
Vonn, 40, was making her first appearance at the Alpine skiing world championships in six years.
She posted the 16th-fastest time at the first split before hitting the gate in her second attempt.
"I am OK," Vonn said. "I hit my nerve somehow and I hit the gate and lost feeling in my arm, but it's coming back slowly."
Austrian skier Stephanie Venier won the competition by finishing 0.1 seconds ahead of Federica Brignone of Italy. Lauren Macuga of the United States and Norwegian Kajsa Vickhoff Lie shared the bronzes after finishing 0.24 second off the lead.
Vonn has stated her goal is to compete in the Milan Cortina Games in 2026, which would be her fifth Olympics. She has three Olympic medals in all.
At 22, Macuga was making her first start in the world championship. She became the youngest skier to medal in a worlds speed event in 12 years.
