Make The Refs Give Their Salaries!
In a nice touch, the referees in the United States Hockey League, over the weekend, will be wearing pink referee uniforms this Friday to promote breast cancer awareness. Not only that, but they will be donating their entire game salary to the American Cancer Society, plus their per diem and an auctioning off of the jerseys.
So that's the good news. What we found amazing: When you add up all the referee's and line judges' salaries, per diems and auctioned-off pink jerseys, the total they're expected to raise comes out to ... $3,000. Three thousand bucks? That's it? Realize that Alex Rodriguez could donate one at-bat — he's already wearing pink lipstick! — and raise triple that. (Someone who's better at math than we are could figure out that exact amount.) We're all for charitable contributions, particularly for such a great cause and particularly from such a tiny league like the USHL, but surely someone could come up with a better way than making the freaking refs donate.
