Marc-Andre Fleury Did Something Ridiculous
Marc-Andre Fleury turned in the single best glove save of the year so far, absolutely robbing Erik Karlsson and preserving a tie in what would be a 2-1 Penguins OT victory. I can't say enough great things about this save, and the flexibility and reflexes required to snatch that puck out of the air while flopping to his left, but Karlsson probably said it best: "That's something that I did not count on."
Dan Bylsma called it the best save he's ever seen Fleury make ( that's saying something), and just maybe the best save he's seen live in 30 years of hockey.
Fleury is the first goalie to 30 wins, and is 20-3 at home, and with a great team in front of him and the Penguins running away with the mediocre Metropolitan, maybe it takes a far-fetched save like this to notice that he's having his best season as a pro. And yet Fleury, who rode the pine in Vancouver, won't even be heading to Sochi after missing out on the last spot to Mike Smith, who's been just shy of terrible.
Fleury's earned himself a reputation as a guy who can bring it in the regular season and buckles come playoff time, and you've got to think Hockey Canada considers the Olympics one of those pressure situations he's had trouble dealing with. It's one of a few confusing Canada roster decisions, and probably doesn't mean much unless Carey Price and Roberto Luongo collapse completely, but you'd be hard-pressed to find an opponent that wouldn't be happier seeing Smith in net these days.
Maybe the snub, which started when Fleury wasn't invited to Olympic orientation camp last summer, is what's driving him. Maybe Tomas Vokoun going down with blood clots in preseason have taken the pressure off Fleury. Maybe the Penguins finally have solid, consistent goaltending and will be terrifying in the postseason. Or maybe Fleury's just setting himself up for another collapse. When the Olympic break begins after Friday's games, he'll have three weeks to think about it.
