Marlins designate OF Avisail Garcia for assignment

The Miami Marlins designated former All-Star outfielder Avisail Garcia for assignment on Tuesday.
Garcia, who turns 33 this month, had been on the injured list since April 28 with a left hamstring strain. Miami returned Garcia from his rehab assignment and reinstated him from the IL in order to execute the DFA.
In 18 games with the Marlins prior to the injury, Garcia hit .240 with two home runs and two RBIs. He batted .105 (2-for-19) with seven strikeouts in five rehab games at Triple-A Jacksonville.
Garcia is in the third year of a four-year, $53 million contract he signed with Miami in December 2021. The Marlins still owe him about $24 million, per ESPN.
Garcia is a career .263 hitter with 140 homers and 524 RBIs in 1,104 games over 13 seasons with the Detroit Tigers (2012-13), Chicago White Sox (2013-18), Tampa Bay Rays (2019), Milwaukee Brewers (2020-21) and Marlins. He was an All-Star with the White Sox in 2017.
In corresponding roster moves, the Marlins reinstated catcher Christian Bethancourt from the bereavement list and sent catcher Jhonny Pereda and right-hander Woo-Suk Go to Triple-A.
