Matt Harvey To The DL With A Torn Elbow Ligament
EVERYBODY PANIC.
Newsday's Marc Carig reports that Mets starter and shining beacon of hope Matt Harvey underwent an MRI this morning. The Daily News' Andy Martino adds that Harvey has been experiencing forearm soreness. (Update: Mike Francesa just reported that Harvey will go on the disabled list with a partially torn UCL.) Details are scarce, but these are the Mets and you should not wait to start imagining the worst-case scenario.
Harvey has been fantastic in his first full season but has looked a little more human over his last few starts, most recently getting knocked around by Detroit for 13 hits on Saturday.
Harvey's on a Strasburg-esque limit, reported to be around 200 innings (he's currently at 178), so if there's even the slightest fear that something's not right, it would be in the fourth-place Mets' best interest to handle him with a maximum of caution. That includes getting an MRI for even minor soreness, and possibly bumping up the timetable for Operation Shutdown.
Update: In a press conference, GM Sandy Alderson said the MRI results came as a surprise because Harvey wasn't feeling any elbow pain, though there is soreness and swelling in the forearm. The plan is to let Harvey rest and see if the swelling goes down, though "we can't rule out the possibility of surgery." Even if Harvey doesn't require surgery, Alderson said he "wouldn't expect him to pitch the rest of the season."
