Michelle Carter Is The First American Woman To Win Shot Put Gold
Photo credit: Matt Dunham/ [object Object] Michelle Carter’s sixth and final throw in the women’s shot put final went 20.63 meters, smashing the U.S. record and earning her the first Olympic gold for an American woman in that event:
Carter is the daughter of three-time All-Pro nose tackle Michael Carter, who won three Super Bowls with the San Francisco 49ers and remains the only person to win an NFL title and an Olympic medal in the same year; he took silver at Los Angeles ‘84, also in the shot put.
Correction (2:35 p.m.): We initially said Michael Carter won gold in Los Angeles; Italian Alessandro Andrei was actually the winner.
