Mikaela Shiffrin's streak in slalom ends
Mikaela Shiffrin of the U.S. in the women's giant slalom in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia on Jan. 3, 2026 Mikaela Shiffrin finished in second place Sunday in the World Cup slalom event in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, snapping her streak of six consecutive wins in the discipline.
Switzerland's emerging star Camille Rast nipped Shiffrin by 0.14 seconds to sweep the weekend events. The 26-year-old won the giant slalom on Saturday and dedicated the win to the victims of the New Year's Eve fire that killed at least 40 and injured approximately 120 people at the Crans-Montana ski resort in Switzerland, not far from her hometown of Vetroz.
Shiffrin's win streak started with the final race of the 2024-25 season in March and extended through the first five World Cup events this season.
"I don't believe it's possible to win every race in the season with the competition level," Shiffrin, 30, said post-race. "Actually, I hope it wouldn't be possible. But still, I wanted to give it my best shot.
"How I saw Camille ski the first run, I had to go 120% in order to have a chance. I was pushing so hard, I felt like I was flying. I was really proud of my run. I was just in awe of Cami."
Shiffrin and Rast are expected to be among the gold-medal favorites at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics next month.
Shiffrin said she was pleased with her outing on Sunday.
"I had a really specific goal for my skiing for the second (run), a little bit technical thing, and I felt like I really accomplished that," she said.
The next slalom race will be run Jan. 13 in Flachau, where Rast is the defending champion and Shiffrin a five-time winner. The final slalom before the Olympics will come Jan. 25 in Czechia.
Shiffrin is the winner of a record 106 World Cup events.
