James surpassed Abdul-Jabbar's league mark for total minutes played at 66,298 in the first quarter of the Lakers' game with the Philadelphia 76ers.
The record, which Abdul-Jabbar set at 66,297, includes regular-season and playoff games.
In his 20th season, James hit the milestone on Monday as the 76ers surged to a 28-15 lead with a 20-2 run in the opening quarter Monday.
James eased past Abdul-Jabbar for the all-time NBA scoring record held by the legendary Bucks and Lakers center until last season. James became the first NBA player with 39,000 career points and continues to distance himself from the former record of 38,387 points.
Abdul-Jabbar still leads James and Wilt Chamberlain and holds the NBA record for field goals made (15,837).
James entered play Monday night with 14,304. He holds the record for field goals made in the playoffs with 2,872.
James is fourth on the NBA's all-time assists list behind Chris Paul, Jason Kidd and record-holder John Stockton (15,806).
