MLB adapting Spring Breakout into dual-tournament event in 2027
Milwaukee Brewers prospect Jesus Made runs off the field during the spring breakout game on March 17, 2025. MLB is adapting its annual Spring Breakout event into a pair of tournaments starting in 2027.
The event, which began in 2024 as a set of games during spring training to highlight each team's farm system, will now see both the Grapefruit League in Florida and Cactus League in Arizona hold single-elimination tournaments to determine a pair of champions.
According to MLB.com, 210 players who participated in the first two years of Spring Breakout have gone on to play in the major leagues. That includes three of the four Rookies of the Year over the last two years in Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes, Athletics first baseman Nick Kurtz and Braves catcher Drake Baldwin.
This year's Spring Breakout will take place as a series of isolated games from March 19-22, after the conclusion of the World Baseball Classic (March 5-17).
