New York Mets Pitcher Jorge Lopez Ejected, Tossed Glove Into Stands, Bashes Team Postgame, Immediately DFA’d
It was not a good night for Jorge Lopez.
The New York Mets reliever was ejected mid-count in the 8th inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday evening. The Mets were down 9-3, and Lopez stormed off the field after being ejected, throwing his glove over the netting and into the stands behind New York’s dugout.
While the fans were excited to receive a once in a lifetime souvenir, the SNY broadcast team seemed truly stunned.
“That’s where the Mets are at right now,” analyst Keith Hernandez said, “It’s not a good optic.”
The ejection itself was just as baffling as the glove toss. The broadcast couldn’t seem to figure out how the pitcher and the third base umpire would ever exchange words, but here we are in another odd situation for New York.
It’s a new low for the Mets, who are 22-33 on the year and now 16 games out of first place in the National League East.
But that’s not where the drama ends. After the game, reporters flocked around Lopez’s locker where he doubled down on his frustration.
“I don’t regret it,” Lopez said of his glove toss. “I think I’ve been on the worst team in probably the whole f-ing MLB.”
The Mets are not technically the worst team in the MLB, but it sure feels it right now. This team should all have circus music as their walkup songs. Things are unraveling quickly.
Lopez would continue his postgame remarks by saying “whatever happens, happens,” explaining that he’ll be back at Citi Field tomorrow if the Mets want him to be there.
News flash. The Mets don’t want him there.
Immediately after the postgame remarks, Lopez was DFA’d, putting a bow on his insane evening that will live on in Mets lore forever.
New York’s bullpen will now be even thinner, as they just placed struggling reliever Edwin Diaz on the injured list with a right shoulder injury.
New York did receive some good news, despite the sweep. Slugger Pete Alonso, who left Wednesday’s game with a hand injury, returned negative x-rays, according to skipper Carlos Mendoza.
Lopez is a 14 year MLB veteran, appearing in over 250 games with six different organizations. This season, in 28 appearances with the Mets, he has a 3.76 ERA. It’s possible that he gets another opportunity this season after a wild night on a dysfunctional team.
The Mets have won just two of their last 10 games. They were just swept by the Dodgers and will host the National League Champion Arizona Diamondbacks this weekend.
A few things are certain. Lopez will not be there this weekend. But Mendoza’s circus is likely to continue.
