No Time For Pitchers
If this is a preview of the NLCS (sorry, Central Division! A fruit basket is on its way), we don't plan to miss a single game. Tom Glavine (he's still stuck at 299 career wins) and Derek Lowe both stunk, which is always fun, because the Mets and Dodgers combined for 35 hits in a 13-9 win by New York. Carlos Delgado and Ramon Castro hit consecutive home runs in the sixth and Carlos Beltran had a solo homer in the eighth. Matt Kemp had a two-run home run for the Dodgers, who lost for the second time in three games to drop into a first-place tie with San Diego for the West lead.
• No Comment! Leave Me Alone! Barry Bonds hit homers No. 752 and 753 to leave him two shy of Aaron, as the Giants lost 9-8 to the Cubs, who got their 18th victory in the past 23 games, moving six games over .500 (50-44) for the first time since June 11, 2005. And in a delightful twist, you couldn't shut Bonds up after the game, but the kid who retrieved the second home run ball refused to talk to the press: "Tyler Olson, a 13-year-old from Freeport, Ill., came up with No. 753. The teen declined comment."
• Rock Out With Your Sox Out. There it is again, that inevitable feeling of doom for Boston fans; like a cement block resting on your chest. A.J. Pierzynski was 3-for-4 with three RBI as the White Sox beat the Red Sox 4-2. Thing is though, the Yankees also lost, 3-2 to the Blue Jays, to remain seven back in the East.
• The Young And The Restless. Chris Young (9-3) has a 1.85 ERA, and it's a good thing, because the Padres are cheap bastards when it comes to giving him run support. Young gave up two hits over seven innings in San Diego's 1-0 win over the Phillies.
• Indians 7, Rangers 5. C.C. Sabathia, your first 13-game winner in the majors. Take a bow SeeSee. OK, that's enough; don't milk it.
