Ostlund's power-play goal with 57 seconds left in the first period gave the Sabres a 1-0 lead. Positioned to Skinner's left, with his back to the net and just off the crease, Ostlund took a pass, spun, went from backhand to forehand and beat Skinner with a quick shot. It came with McDavid in the penalty box for high-sticking.
The Oilers outshot the Sabres seven to six in the opening period. Alex Tuch had two shots for Buffalo in the opening 20 minutes.
