Mandatory Credit: Kevin Jairaj-Imagn Images Noah Reynolds delivered the go-ahead basket on a runner with 24 seconds left to help TCU notch a 71-67 home win over BYU on Saturday in Fort Worth, Texas.
Reynolds led TCU with 21 points and Vasean Allette added 11 points with five assists. In his first start, freshman Micah Robinson added 10 points and hit a pair of free throws with four seconds left to seal the win for the Horned Frogs (9-6, 2-2 Big 12), who have won nine straight home games.
Richie Saunders led BYU with a game-high 26 points. Saunders connected on 5 of 7 3-pointers for the Cougars (10-5, 1-3) who have dropped three straight games and fallen to 0-3 in road contests.
Saunders' corner 3-pointer with 3:10 left in the game gave BYU a 65-63 lead, but TCU answered when David Punch slammed home a two-hand dunk on a fastbreak that tied the game at 65.
Saunders and Reynolds each hit a pair of free throws before Reynolds delivered the decisive bucket.
The back and forth game featured 17 lead changes, and each team mounted a double-digit scoring run during the first half.
A 3-pointer by Brendan Wenzel gave TCU a three-point lead and ignited a 10-point flurry. Reynolds helped punctuate the surge when he tracked down a loose ball and sent an outlet pass to Ernest Udeh Jr., whose breakaway two-hand jam put TCU up 33-23 at the 5:12 mark.
The separation would be short lived as a Saunders layup stopped the BYU drought and sparked a 14-0 answer from the Cougars. TCU would go scoreless for a stretch of 5:15 until Trazarien White made a free throw with less than a second on the clock as BYU took a 37-34 halftime lead.
Early in the second half, Allette, Punch and White barreled into the teeth of the BYU defense for contested layups as TCU went on a 6-0 run to take a 47-46 lead.
